Alone: Edgar Allan Poe
Posted 9 February 2007
on:I know it’s Robert E Howard… again! I can’t help myself… there are so many poems that fit the life of this tragic man. Maybe in some small way I am trying to bring him back to life.
From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

You’ve made such a fitting choice again, Ann.
Didn’t Ruth Rendell take the last line as the title of one of her books? It sounds strangely familiar.

I love the new look of the blog … and of course your choice of verse!

‘Sniffle’ It fits Bob so well, thank you as always.

Anaabel Lee is my favorite poem from Edgar Allen Poe

I’VE OFTEN FELT LIKE THIS MYSELF

That’s an awesome poem and so fitting for the great Robert E Howard. He was a big fan of Poe himself.

I so enjoy your poetry choices. I feel like I’m in a poetry appreciation class. Each one makes me seek out more from the writers. I agree with you about REH. It seems his tragic story goes well with verse.
